If you haven’t started using the iray rendering engine, then now is the time to really take a good look at it. This add-on manager by Artur Leão helps you immensely in setting up your iray renderings. It unleashes some of the hidden functionality in 3ds Max (Design). With the iRay Manager, you can select which gpu(s) to use when rendering and/or you can select to use the cpu and how many threads to use when rendering.
Those options are awesome, but the ability to
override the current color/background map with a
solid color is one I think a lot of our
customers might use. You can select to
receive shadows and/or reflections on the z
plane. All of these settings are saved
with the scene also – totally cool!
Get instructions on how to install and
download the iRay Manager 1.6 here.
Also, check out
this blog post on the subject by Jamie

Here are a couple of images done in iray,
using the iRay Manager settings and the
rendering time set to 30 seconds.
Materials consisted of copper, metallic paint,
glass and a generic glossy material. I
added one direct light to match shadows in the
background image; however, it is not necessary
to add a light in order to get shadows on the
ground plane.
