Chad Pepmiller Receives Recognition at
Autodesk University for ?Battle Bots?
creation
Chad
Pepmiller, a senior at Missouri State University in
Springfield, MO was invited by Autodesk to attend Autodesk
University and exhibit his robot ?Bear Punch.? Bear Punch
was featured in the Dec 10 airing of ?Battle Bots? on the
CBS College Sports channel as it went head to head with
another robot ?Chunk.? Both robots were designed using
Autodesk Inventor. To create Bear Punch, Chad used the
Electrical tool inside Inventor to run the pneumatic and
electrical systems for the robot. He also used stress
analysis on the steel frame to be sure it could handle the
stress of battle. Chad only had one piece of steel to cut
and it had to be cut right the first time. Using Digital
Prototyping, Chad was able to model out the robot before any
cutting was done. According to Chad, ?It all fit together
perfectly after it was cut.?
Chad is a Chemistry major, but gained interest in robotics
through his participation with SME. Chad is currently the VP
of the SME student chapter at Missouri State. Each semester
the chapter builds a robotics projects, and in the fall they
participate in a competition with the accreditation
association. His work on Bear Punch was awarded ?Best Design
and Innovation? and also received second place in
?Electronics and Control.?
Autodesk is the primary sponsor for the Battle Bots
community as they fund the setup and filming, and supply
software for the students. This year the competition
included 15 college teams, 27 high school teams, and 27
professional teams. The TV show featured only the college
bots. Five battles were chosen for the December 10 episode,
including the battle between Bear Punch and Chunk. This
episode pre-aired in the Manufacturing VIP Lounge Autodesk
University. Autodesk CEO Carl Bass attended the battle in
April (during filming) and was again present at the airing
at AU.
Chad will graduate from Missouri State in December with a
degree in Chemistry. He is the son of Clayton Pepmiller who
has been a Solutions Engineer with Hagerman & Company in St.
Louis for over 13 years. When asked what he wants to do
after graduation, Chad replied, ?I want to work with
Inventor in the design field, possibly working with robots
in factory equipment.? Chad is currently seeking employment.
If your company is seeking applicants for such a position, I
believe you would be fortunate to have Chad on your team.
