Applying multiple profile curve
labels to a single profile
An AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010 user recently posed an
interesting question to me regarding the use of multiple
Profile Curve Labels for a single Profile. It is something
that I had never considered to be a problem, but he pointed
out that in the following case, he would prefer not to show
a high point elevation and station:
Although there is technically a high point in this curve, it
is clearly redundant information considering the high point
elevation and station are the same as the elevation and
station for the beginning of the vertical curve.
If he were to change the style associated with this label,
the style for each of the other crest curves would change as
well and that is not necessarily the desired effect.
Eventually, we did find two ways to make this change that
produce good results.
Method 1
Civil 3D 2010 gives us the ability to edit label text for
individual labels that override the style applied to the
label and the interface allows us to do it very easily.
Simply select the label and the contextual ribbon at the top
of the interface switches to show labeling tools. We can
then choose the option to Edit Label Text.
We can then delete the undesired components of the label
without changing the other labels or the definition of the
label style.
Method 2
Upon creation, the profile can be labeled with a label set
that assigns a single style to multiple components of the
profile. For example, every Crest Profile Curve may be
labeled with the style called Crest Only. After creation,
we can review the labels applied to the profile by selecting
the profile and choosing the option to Edit Labels.
Using this dialog box, we can now use the Start Station and
End Station check boxes to force the program to apply label
styles to a range of stations. It is an easy task now to add
another label style for crest curves and limit its use to
the area of the profile that needs special attention.
