Recently I have been asked the question, “How do I get my ROW
lines in my section views?” followed immediately by the
statement “Land Desktop could do it really easily.” Well, we are
going to explore the way to create and use a style in Civil 3D
that will allow you to do just that. It will take a bit of style
and code setup but will only need to be done once and then can
be used as many times as you could possibly hope for.
We will
start by setting up an assembly or editing one that we already
use all the time. Once this is in the drawing we can begin the
process of setting up this style and get ready to see some ROW
labels in your section.

Once we get our assembly in we are going to add a few generic
links from the LinkOffsetOnSurface subassembly. We need to make
sure we add one link to the left and one to the right of the
assembly. The offset does not matter, as we will use targets to
place where these will end up.

Also when using this subassembly to create these we want to
switch the Omit Link option to “yes.” This is because we do not
want to see these links in our section or assembly.

What we want to do next is to delete the link codes
altogether. Then we will want to delete the point codes and add
RW as the point code. This will let us mark these alignments in
the section using targeting in the corridor and add the
appropriate marker style.

Once we finish modifying the subassembly we will want to
create alignments out of our ROW lines. Then we will use them to
target our LinkOffsetOnSurface subassemblies to those
alignments, placing the marker on them.

Then we can go ahead and create our sample lines and section
views the way that we always have.

The ROW lines will not be in your section as of yet but we
still have to create a marker style and attach it to the code we
created in the subassembly earlier in the exercise (see picture
4). Under the General tree in the settings tab is where you will
find the marker label styles. This is where you will create your
ROW label however you would like it.

Now that we have a marker style available to fit our needs
all we need to do is make sure that the code that we used in our
subassembly is present in the code set that we are using for our
corridor. If you go to the Code Set Styles folder under the
general tree in the settings tab you will be able to add the
code and style to the code set you are using for your corridor.

Under the Code Set you are using, right-click on the Point
codes and choose “ADD.” It will ask you for a marker style so if
you only want your ROW label to show choose “No_Markers.” The
Code you create will be called NEW CODE at first so rename it to
“RW” and it will match up with the code that you created with
your subassembly. Then you can simply add your created style to
that code.

Once you apply the changes and say OK your ROW alignments
will be labeled in your section.

Just a little bit of setup can go a long way in Civil 3D. Now
we have a subassembly that can be saved into our common
assemblies, getting those pesky ROW labels into our sections
should no longer be an issue.
