Inventor Studio

Inventor Studio

Autodesk Inventor 10 has been out for a while now. I am sure that a good number of the Inventor users are aware of most of the functionality enhancements that this version has to offer. In this edition of the mechanical product review I want to take a moment to point out one function in specific. This new tool in the software will allow more realistic images to be created while working inside Autodesk Inventor®. Inventor Studio is this new enhancement, and it is accessible in any of your model file types.

Autodesk Inventor by itself can create some very nice images right out of the box. (Click Figure 2 to see full size image) You have the ability to create custom colors and add textures to them. But once you activate the Inventor Studio, you have many more options that will allow you to configure the image to look even better.

Inside Inventor Studio you will have new controls for surface and lighting styles. These go above and beyond the configuration options that you already have with Inventor. In the new surface styles, you have ability to add bump mapping to your colors to give your parts a more natural look. (Click Figure 3 to see full size image)  With the lighting styles you have the ability to configure multiple lights with different types and colors. (Click Figure 4 to see full size image) You can also configure shadows and reflections of your models.

Just by using those tools you can give quite a different appearance to your models. These images that you will now be able to create will be much better suited for online publications as well as print versions. Gone will be the days of going to outside sources for creation of marketing and sales brochures. (Click Figure 5 to see full size image)

Now I know what you are thinking. “Wow, this is great news!” But there is more. Not only can you create wonderful images, but you can now create even more advanced movie files as well. Once you combine the tools I just mentioned with the ability to create cameras, your animations of assemblies in motion take on a whole new perspective.
